Celebrate Black History Month with Black Ice
This February, 27, 2026 (Friday) we invite you to join us for a special Black History Month screening of Black Ice, a groundbreaking documentary that reclaims a forgotten chapter of Canadian sports history.
In a month dedicated to honoring the legacy and achievements of Black communities, Black Ice serves as a powerful reminder that the story of hockey—a sport central to Canadian identity—is deeply intertwined with Black history. Long before the NHL, and dating back to 1865, the Colored Hockey League of the Maritimes (CHL) was formed. As the first all-Black professional league in Canada, these resilient athletes not only pioneered the game but also revolutionized it, introducing innovations like the “splashout” that shaped modern hockey.
This film is more than a sports story; it is a testament to Black excellence, ingenuity, and the unyielding spirit of community. It challenges what we think we know and celebrates the diverse roots of a national obsession.
